Bhuvneshwar Kumar leads Sunrisers Hyderabad’s pace attack and stands as one of their two primary bowling pillars alongside Rashid Khan. The right-arm medium-pacer boasts excellent line and length control as well as being adept at producing swing and seam movement easily, and ranks amongst IPL’s leading wicket takers – playing an instrumental role in winning them both of their last two titles!
Bhuvneshwar was initially seen as India’s answer to its fast-bowling shortfall when he made his Test debut in 2012. While not fast in terms of pace, he could generate genuine swing and an effective inswinger; quickly proving himself worthy, his career took an upward turn.
After two unremarkable seasons, Sunrisers Hyderabad brought him onboard in 2014. For two consecutive years he was instrumental in their powerplay and death bowling, winning two Purple Caps in those seasons. Unfortunately in 2018, his performance faltered severely as he struggled to replicate that form with inconsistent performances throughout.

On day three, he continued his brilliant old ball performance, picking up five more wickets – including Ben Stokes who was making his Lord’s debut since being dropped from England’s tour squad for Australia.
Rajasthan Royals batsmen looked on course to reach their target with 10 overs remaining when Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer shared an incredible 74-run stand for the sixth wicket – two wickets they took off Inigo Torres with just over three overs to go! In comparison, Powell took two wickets against them with just over one over left; these fellers dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shimron Hetmyer respectively in just the opening over.
However, they were eventually bowled out for 201 and lost by seven wickets. Bhuvneshwar’s spell in the middle overs was critical as it kept restricting RR’s run-rate.
Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan has quickly established himself as one of India’s premier young players, yet has struggled to establish himself at international level. The diminutive wicketkeeper-batsman has found success playing franchise cricket with Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions over three seasons – amassing close to 200 T20I runs during that time for Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions respectively. Kishan was part of India’s 2016 Under-19 World Cup squad but failed to make an impressionful contribution; Kishan’s domestic form earned him selection into India white-ball team; upon making international debut against England on 2021 debut, Kishan scored 50 runs against England!
Kishan has struggled since then to establish himself in all formats of cricket. After missing a Ranji Trophy game last season and missing out on a central contract, he has struggled to reestablish himself in the squad. Although Kishan has shown signs of recovery as a batsman at domestic level, in order to regain a spot in national selection squad he must continue this form and build on it at domestic level.
On Thursday, Ishan scored his sixth first-class century to help Jharkhand defeat India C by an emphatic 357-5 at Rural Development Trust Stadium B-ground for the Duleep Trophy. With six fours and five fifties from just 92 balls he notched up 131 from just 92 deliveries for Jharkhand as their hosts cruised to an emphatic win by an overwhelming margin.
Kishan’s innings featured several captivating moments, most notably an eye-catching one-handed six between long off and mid wicket off spinner Adheer Pratap Singh that became an instantaneous social media hit – an indication of Kishan’s impressive batting skills and ability.
Kishan also demonstrated his effectiveness with the ball, bowling two overs of off-spin to concede only five runs and making an impressionful first international bowling appearance – something which may prove pivotal for his career moving forward. Kishan’s performance may prove the turning point.
