Statistics
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), known by its abbreviation in Indian Premier League competition as an Indian Premier League team based out of Bengaluru in Karnataka and India since 2008 and owned by United Spirits. Under Rahul Johri as their current coach and playing home games at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
RCB will face off against Delhi in their final match before breaking camp and heading back home to Bengaluru. Their season has not gone well thus far and another loss would be another blow against their hopes for success.
Royal Challengers remain hopeful of earning one of four top-four positions this season. They currently sit third on the points table and must win all remaining fixtures to have any hope of making it through. Other teams around them must drop points as well if they want any chance at top four placement.
RCB got off to an excellent start, with both Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis scoring half-centuries early in their innings. Additionally, the middle order provided excellent support while their bowlers performed superbly; at the end of their inning they had reached 182 runs.
DC was inconsistent in their batting. After losing four wickets within the Powerplay, they eventually amassed 180/6 with Dinesh Karthik and Heinrich Klassen both making outstanding efforts but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to save DC from defeat.
As DC chased their target, Richa Ghosh provided a late surge and scored quickly to a half-century, but two runs were needed from her last ball and she was run out at non-striker’s end.
At one point in the match, Rishabh Pant from Delhi Capitals was penalized for slow over-rate. This marked his third offence of the season and earned him one match suspension from BCCI Ombudsman; an appeal was filed, but this ruling stood. This could have significant ramifications on DC’s top four race as CSK and LSG still need wins to reach fourth position in their respective leagues.
RCB 152/7 in 20 Overs
After winning the toss, Delhi bowled well to restrict RCB to 152/7 in 20 overs despite an uncharacteristically scratchy 41 from Kohli; their batsmen continued losing wickets regularly as result of Delhi’s tight bowling attack.
Ajinkya Rahane finally reached fifty off 37 balls after an otherwise lackluster season and will look to push on now, joining Shikhar Dhawan who is hoping to get back into form himself.
The two teams are taking an intelligent approach and playing smart cricket. While trying to score runs, they also strive to keep their deficit as small as possible.
Washington Sundar returns in the 14th over with another wicket-taking ball from him – this one squarely hitting Shaw on his pads in similar fashion as what had gotten him out in previous over. Unfortunately, however, HawkEye clearly showed it hitting both sets of stumps! However, this time around the umpire did not give out and instead awarded one run for Shaw.
He followed it up with another wicket-taking delivery in the next over. While looking to drive down the ground, his balance completely collapsed when the short, straight ball took some unexpected arc and turned through gaps, ending up in Marcus Stoinis’ hands at deep midwicket.
Delhi was in good form in their next over, as Nortje struck twice to remove Padikkal and Morris with ease, before having an opportunity to run out Rohit but being narrowly denied by Pant.
Kohli attempted to push up the pace in the 16th over, only for Nortje’s delivery to hit him at deep midwicket where Stoinis took an easy catch off top-edge. Kohli tried smashing over the fence but only succeeded in picking up an edge which gave Stoinis a straightforward catch.
After joining in the middle, AB de Villiers scored his first boundary off his third ball – an immense six that took him to 43 off 32 balls.
RCB have made sure not to lose too many wickets in the 17th over, and so far they are doing exactly that. Ajinkya Rahane is in the middle and trying to play an intelligent innings; trying not to give up yet with their chase. Averaging over 100 in IPL this season but recently not performing as desired; an important player on their team they need now for him to step up.
Delhi 173 all out in 20 Overs
Once again, Faf du Plessis applauded RCB on their outstanding performance, and expressed his pride that they had done so well. He noted their hard work in the nets was paying dividends; with them scoring 200 runs regularly recently being an indicator that batters are becoming more confident. Furthermore, due to an especially gripping pitch which made bowling easier and they gladly accepted taking it up as part of their task.
Axar Patel was quick to acknowledge their error of dropping catches as one of the main factors in losing four wickets during the powerplay and being chased after losing them all, leading them down an unexpected route towards defeat. Moving forward, their focus will shift onto winning their home final match at which time they plan to make it count; also thanking fans who came out in large numbers during this season.
