KKR – 166
CSK used MA Chidambaram stadium‘s batting-friendly conditions to their advantage today as they posted an impressive total. Dew added another advantage for CSK batsmen while slow reaction from KKR left them vulnerable against CSK’s pace attack.
Sunil Narine and Philip Salt were in the middle with Khaleel Ahmed bowling new ball. Ahmed got good purchase with his delivery, inducing a top-edge from Iyer that Stubbs took well at deep backward point. Narine then hit through cover region for a boundary, followed by Salt’s six over extra cover to increase KKR’s scoreboard total.
Ishant Sharma is brought on in place of Varun Chakravarthy and immediately makes an impactful statement with an outstanding delivery which strikes Rishabh Pant in the ribs, leaving him struggling. In response, Pant attempts to up his game by driving in but misses and misses again and the ball crashes into the ropes for four.
But Delhi captain is determined not to let the game slip away, striking an excellent straight drive off his backhand against turn and smashing another six over long-on fence for another six, reaching his fifty off 23 balls with an amazing shot.
As Axar Patel attempts to increase his pace, his balance collapses and the ball hits him on his pads before running away for a single. Stubbs then hits an opposite-turn drive that speeds towards the boundary as required run rate creeps closer.
Russell the Muscle! read a banner in the crowd as he launched a Rasikh Salam delivery over the long-on fence for a maximum, followed by another straight drive hitting third man territory for another boundary, as Kolkata were on top of their game.
As KKR take control, the required rate steadily climbs higher until Angkrish Raghuvanshi attempts a ramp shot against Nortje and falls. Rahul Tewary at third man then caught him. This victory marks a first for KKR as they win their opening three matches of any IPL season.
CSK – 277/7
CSK are looking to return to form after suffering two consecutive defeats and take on Pat Cummins and Company at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday.
Mukesh Choudhary replaces Shivam Dube in this game due to injury and immediately gets a single off the first ball, but is then overwhelmed by Abhishek Sharma who scores 37 runs off 12 balls for his innings and climbs into the top five in Orange Cap standings with it.
Abhishek Sharma strikes two fours to reach fifty off 31 balls and set on course to becoming the first Indian batsman ever to score 500 runs in IPL 2024. Abhishek Sharma has been impressive this season.
Moeen Ali walks out as CSK’s number three batsman and makes an unsuccessful attempt at hitting six off his first delivery, pulling it back for a boundary through midwicket before smashing another through midwicket to move his team closer towards its target.
He pushes the ball towards long on for a single, and moved towards his bowler to attempt getting another run, but the umpire wouldn’t allow it. Ravindra Jadeja came onto bat in the final over of this match to see it out.
Jadeja is in terrific form and already boasts two fours in his innings. When the midwicket region was reached he unleashed one six and took his team closer to winning run rate.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and his players from SRH are not currently performing at their best and hope to find some much-needed momentum against CSK. Last time these teams met, SRH edged past by an overwhelming margin.
CSK are without their star fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for this match as he flew back home to Bangladesh to finalise U.S Visa formalities ahead of the World Cup. As Mustafizur won’t return until then either, his absence could prove pivotal in their hopes to claim IPL victory this season; they currently sit fourth place with three wins out of three matches played so far this IPL campaign.
KKR – 146/9
Nitish Rana batted an aggressive 57 off 34 balls but Kolkata were well short of a defendable total at Chepauk. Though Rana provided a chance for acceleration with his counter attack half century, Kuldeep Yadav made sure his four wickets and slow run-rate had an effect.
After winning the toss, Delhi made two changes; Mitchell Marsh returned from Covid and Chetan Sakariya took his place after Khaleel Ahmed sustained an injured hamstring. Delhi’s gamble paid off as they quickly established control of their run chase.
Umesh Yadav provided an early blow with his brilliant caught and bowled of Prithvi Shaw as he attempted to hit one over the ropes, before Harshit Rana took an excellent catch at point off Sakariya’s third delivery, to dismiss Aaron Finch (3) and secure victory for Australia.
Things began to unravel for KKR in the 14th over when Kuldeep returned and started unleashing havoc with his googly. Iyer got hit for a thick bottom-edge which Pant was quick to react and take an excellent diving catch to secure victory for his side.
West Indies player Kieron Pollard wasn’t around long, as Kuldeep trapped him leg before on the fourth ball and Axar Patel ran out in the next over, leading KKR to collapse to 83/6 with just six wickets remaining in their innings.
Kuldeep struck again in the 16th over, this time using three consecutive deliveries to dismiss Andre Russell (0) for just three. Russell then gave KKR hope with a six but was taken at long-on by Kuldeep for his fourth wicket of the night as they crumbled to 146/9.
Rovman Powell was unbeaten on 33 off 16 balls as Delhi cruised to a five wicket win, propelling them up the table to sixth spot and freeing themselves of mid-table contention. Meanwhile, KKR suffered their fifth consecutive defeat – further diminishing their hopes of making playoffs this season and having much work ahead in order to do so in their remaining five matches.
CSK – 145/9
CSK made full use of Chepauk conditions as they have the best home record in IPL and exploited this advantage well today, thanks to Brendon McCullum’s quickfire fifty. After that, CSK’s lower order batsmen took over to help CSK sail through for victory against KKR and overturn their unbeaten run while also swapping table positions between these two sides.
Batting has become easier as the pitch dries out, even with dew still present at the ground affecting batting too much. McCullum and du Plessis are forming an excellent partnership, leading the team to a comfortable victory.
McCullum delivers another powerful stroke to long on, smashing a six for six and scooping one over midwicket for four runs in his next over. The over ends with one run scored, taking his team’s score to 132/3.
Bhatia has returned to the attack, seeking to contain McCullum but instead witnessing him bat hard off the first few balls before hitting a FOUR off his third delivery towards deep midwicket – then single taken on the following ball.
RR need 73 off the final over, and should opt for their big strokes in this over. After the fifth ball was defended due to being slow delivery, one single was taken on the final ball which helped them achieve their target easily and cement KKR into second place. Thank you all and good bye!
