Brisbane Heat Vs Sydney Thunder Match Scorecard : A Short Summary

Max Bryant and Matt Renshaw of Brisbane Heat produced an explosive 108-run partnership to rally their BBL season against Sydney Thunder at The Gabba in an electrifying encounter.

Thunder’s chances looked hopeless at 3-47 in power play with Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams both injured, until assistant coach Dan Christian made his presence felt with an impressive 23-run outburst in relief of Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams.

1. Max Bryant & Matt Renshaw 108 runs

On Monday night at the Gabba, Max Bryant and Matt Renshaw delivered Brisbane Heat a monumental win against Sydney Thunder to put them back in finals contention. At 3-47 after nine overs, reigning champions looked set for yet another straight loss; instead they unleashed Max and Matt with all-out performances which turned the tables dramatically and won by seven wickets! Max Bryant in particular shone brightly for Brisbane Heat, hitting all cylinders like never before to lead their side back into contention for glory and bring them closer than ever to finals contention!

Queensland duo were given some early gifts and made the most of them, producing an epic century stand. Bryant eventually went for 35-ball 72, but Renshaw continued his incredible season by hitting Tom Andrews for a winning boundary off him to seal an amazing win for Queensland.

Full, on middle and leg, Bryant attempts to hit it through covers but miscues, sending it flying towards long off for two runs off an over.

Length ball again, this one quicker and on the pads; Bryant attempts to pull it but can’t quite reach it; instead, the ball slips off his bat and rolls away to fine leg for another single run.

Bryant is now Brisbane’s leading scorer and his impressive form is sure to draw attention from rival clubs during the player movement window. The out of contract left-hander was particularly impressive against Thunder, his innings possibly marking a turning point for his career. Ageing Australia middle-order stars Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis have struggled for consistency while National selectors will want to keep an eye on Bryant who may well prove to be his equal in terms of international selection potential – Heat captain Colin Munro said post match that Bryant “is a big game player”, suggesting this performance could mark Bryant as an international contender!

2. David Warner 86 not out

David Warner returned from injury, having missed much of the season following a head knock at the Twenty20 World Cup, to score an unbeaten 86 at the SCG and prove a comeback for Australia’s batting innings anchored by Usman Khawaja and captain Steve Smith, both scoring half centuries themselves. Warner led by example by hitting an unbeaten knock that set an early tone and showed signs of readiness to lead Australia once more.

Warner and Khawaja battled hard despite cramp and fatigue to help their side achieve a competitive total. Chairs had to be brought out during drinks breaks for them to relax on; towels and ice packs had also been draped across their shoulders during breaks.

Australia’s pace attack led by Pat Cummins did their best to limit Pakistan’s progress as they sought victory at home. Cummins had Babar Azam caught at short third man before bowling Mohammad Rizwan as the wicketkeeper-batsman attempted to pull their side back into contention with an incredible innings of 88 from just 103 deliveries.

Lockie Ferguson struck late to break up Lockie & Ferguson’s fifth-wicket stand and bring Australia under control at 347-5 at stumps, giving them an early 1-0 advantage in this three-match series. David Warner broke a three-year century drought during his innings while also becoming only the sixth player ever to pass 8,000 Test runs and become fastest Aussie to reach 2,000 Test runs within 25 matches (smashing two sixes and 14 fours in his 106 ball knock!). Additionally, he overtook Ricky Ponting as country leading run scorer with 1,024 points total.

3. Dan Christian 23 not out

Dan Christian made an impactful comeback after recently retiring, scoring 23 runs off 15 balls in an unbeaten 23 off 15 innings to help Sydney Thunder secure victory at the Gabba. Also, Christian took one wicket off first-drop batsman Nathan McSweeney as part of his impressive power play performance at The Gabba.

Christian was brought in to help the Thunder weather an injury crisis following Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft suffering concussion and fractured shoulder blade, respectively. Christian has been keeping fit in local cricket leagues, which was evident by his stellar batting display on Monday evening.

With the score at 103 for 3 in the sixth over, Christian’s timely arrival as an opener provided much-needed energy to a struggling Thunder innings. He promptly struck an enormous six off fast bowler Xavier Bartlett that flew past midwicket 92 metres away!

As soon as he reached fifty, his drives and cuts to the boundary became unstoppable, taking him effortlessly past it to reach 100 runs – ultimately breaking through in the penultimate over with an expansive drive through covers off leg spinner Mitchell Swepson to level scores and bring about victory for Australia.

4. Michael Neser 2 for 25

Brisbane Heat have received an invaluable boost ahead of their KFC BBL finals campaign with Michael Neser confirming he will play their next match after suffering an injury scare on Monday. Neser had to retire hurt from Queensland’s Marsh Cup loss against New South Wales due to experiencing side strain.

Max Bryant and Matt Renshaw’s explosive 108-run partnership propelled Brisbane Heat into second spot and playoff contention after an exhilarating win against Sydney Thunder at the Gabba on Monday night. Both native Queenslanders, Bryant (72) and Renshaw (48) delivered powerful strokeplay that saw bowlers dislocated. It was truly impressive.

Even with their best efforts, the Heat were reduced to 2/22 by rainstopping play in the sixth over and forcing a Duckworth-Lewis calculation – used to decide the victor in tied matches where one team has scored more runs without extras being taken.

Neser struck again soon after play resumed when he took out Sam Billings in the ninth over by lunging at a short-of-good-length delivery angled away from him and sky high – where Tom Alsop could take an easy catch with both hands.

Neser’s 30-year-old strike struck again in the tenth over with an offside back-of-a-length ball that swung in from offside for George Garton to pull through midwicket for four. Following this boundary in the eleventh over as visitors edged closer towards victory with 12 needed off two overs, Neser made his mark once more by scoring 25 runs off three overs in just 25 runs to help seal an unlikely five-run win for Heat.

5. Lockie Ferguson 2 for 40

Nicola Hancock to Sammy-Jo Johnson, no run; caught by Jess Jonassen!!! When Nicola Hancock bowls her fast ball on good length towards Sammy-Jo Johnson she backs away and attempts to cut towards point but it goes into the air and was caught perfectly by Jess Jonassen!

Colin Munro had established himself in an excellent batting position after Mitchell Swepson had dropped him on the opening ball of his innings. He proceeded to hit a cover boundary off Neser and Christian’s late flurry before being trapped leg before wicket by Lockie Ferguson off the second ball of the final over while trying to reverse sweep Johnson’s yorker and end his impressive innings.

Ferguson is currently one of only two players who has taken two four-wicket hauls this BBL, trailing only Hobart Hurricanes’ all-time leading wicket taker Nathan Ellis (nine).

Brisbane Heat had to win their match against Sydney Thunder if they wanted to secure top two status, and they did so by scoring an impressive five-wicket victory at The Gabba. Now leading Melbourne Stars by nine points with three matches left to go and on course to clinch home advantage in the semi-finals for what would be their seventh consecutive finals appearance, eight points ahead of Hurricanes in third and two ahead of Adelaide Strikers who still have games in hand over them, Brisbane Heat secured top two positions going into finals – team with most wins will advance.
