Punjab Kings lost to Mumbai Indians in an exciting thriller at Mullanpur despite Ashutosh Sharma’s brilliant 28-ball 61 not being enough as Punjab fell nine runs short.

Ashutosh and Shashank Singh’s counterattacking innings injected some life into the chase for victory.

61 Runs of Ashutosh Sharma

Ashutosh Sharma delivered one of the finest performances of his IPL career but it wasn’t enough as Mumbai Indians beat Punjab Kings by nine runs at Mullanpur. Sharma struck seven sixes from 28 balls but they weren’t enough as Punjab Kings faded late and eventually fell short.

After struggling at the start of this season, Ashutosh has scored two fifties and a half-century in four innings since. His 61 off 25 balls was highlighted by Shashank Singh who top scored with 41 off 25 balls for Punjab.

Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee shared six wickets as MI bowled Punjab out for 192-7 in 20 overs, led by Suryakumar Yadav who scored 78 while Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma played crucial knocks for MI visitors.

Bumrah and Coetzee’s brilliant spell of fast bowling had Punjab reeling at 77-6 within the powerplay. Ashutosh tried his hardest to revive the chase with sixes before being caught behind off Coetzee in 18th over. Harpreet Brar and Shashank weren’t able to maintain required rate and visitors eventually fell short; Ashutosh’s 61 was his maiden fifty in IPL history but his display of fireworks gave Punjab hope of a comeback – as he scored both off second ball sixes as well as two boundaries from Coetzee in four successive overs that gave Punjab hope of making amends before finally falling short.

Shashank Singh 41

Game was in a precarious balance until Ashutosh’s monumental 28-ball 61 gave Kings some hope, followed by Shashank Singh’s blistering 41 off 25 balls from No 6. But Ashutosh’s dismissal in the 19th over put an end to any chances of winning this thrilling matchup.

Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee had stunned the chasing side early, leaving them 14 for 4 in just 2.1 overs before Ashutosh and Shashank kept up their efforts for Kings to maintain a run chase.

After that, things got crazy in an instant. Jasprit was hit on his arm by a delivery from Coetzee and fell to the ground in pain, raising an appeal against umpire Richard Clarke before review saved him. Nabi then caught Harpreet fine in the deep and slapped the stumps causing another appeal but replays proved that bat wasn’t down at any time.

MI need only 13 runs off 34 balls to win and Madhwal will bowl his final over, starting by hitting Ashutosh for four over covers with his first ball before bowler Rabada comes on to try his luck at big shots but misses entirely – unfortunately hitting pads instead. A review saves him but he must work on improving his shot-making.

Suryakumar Yadav 78

Ashutosh Sharma’s outstanding 61 in the first innings and Shashank Singh’s reliable cameo enabled Punjab Kings to stage a late comeback but ultimately fell short against Mumbai Indians by just nine runs at Mullanpur stadium.

Suryakumar Yadav powered MI’s innings with an excellent 78 off 53 balls, showing all his batting prowess while receiving support from Rohit Sharma (36) and Tilak Varma (34 not out).

Suryakumar eventually got himself going and hit four consecutive fours off Kagiso Rabada and Harshal Patel in the third over. Later he lofted inside-out off Rabada for six, followed by pulling him over midwicket for another six – taking 49 balls to reach fifty.

In the final over, he survived an lbw appeal by Sam Curran as replays showed he did not hook the ball. Later he picked a slower back-of-a-length delivery from James Agar and pulled it over midwicket for six – helping MI reach 192/7 in their 20 overs.

Early wickets put some pressure on the batsmen, but their duo of batsmen held firm to see the team to victory. Their two have become adept at scoring big for their team – they did so once more today to achieve another win which is their fourth this season and puts them fifth on the table.

Jasprit Bumrah 3/23

Mumbai Indians held on for a narrow win against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur Stadium in Chandigarh during Match 33 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at Mullanpur. Suryakumar Yadav scored an excellent 78 off 53 balls while Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma added their contributions towards scoring 192-7 in 20 overs for Mumbai Indians, keeping PBKS in contention until their allotted 20 overs had ended. Ashutosh Sharma played an outstanding 28-ball 61 to keep them competitive until final ball played against MI in their allotted 20 overs against PBKS.

Sam Curran wins the toss and opts to bowl first.

Bumrah immediately made inroads when he came into attack, with one straight delivery finding Rohit’s edge and landing in the stands for an early wicket. Soon afterwards he struck another ball into Livingstone’s pads where Coetzee took an incredible catch to pick off him for a first-ball duck – only for Coetzee to later catch behind for another first ball duck from Livingstone!

Kishan drives it hard in the covers for two runs before Ashutosh gets a leg-bye off his first ball of this over. Another dot and single move them towards their target of 105 off 59 with Ishan then smashing a fuller delivery down past short third man for six, speeding up their chase further.

Harpreet Brar 3/21

Home side MI has managed to successfully control the boundary flow. A slowdown has set in and MI are now batting deeply – it may only take one quick hit before the Kings find themselves caught off guard by MI.

Rabada comes on for his final over and starts off by bowling two wides before unleashing an outstanding full and straight delivery to Ashutosh who swats it to long off for an incredible six! In doing so he notched his inaugural IPL fifty.

But then he returns with another short delivery, Ashutosh attempts to pull but Mohammad Nabi at deep mid wicket catches it in mid air for a soft dismissal – MI require 23 runs from 12 now.

Madhwal comes out for his third and begins by playing wide. A single is then hit as Shashank takes strike before playing a switch hit which almost results in six, but was signaled no ball for offside by umpire!

Bumrah then takes the review, bowls a short delivery to Curran who was running and hit it towards short mid wicket but it was blocked in the field; Bumrah attempted a run-out but failed, followed by Ishan Kishan taking strike and getting on strike himself; this resulted in Ishan Kishan reaching first strike before one single was scored off of it.

Kagiso Rabada 3/23

Ashutosh Sharma revived MI from an uneven start with some helicopter pulls and reverse sweeps, but his efforts weren’t enough to push PBKS past their target. Bumrah spoke quietly with Hardik about pitching short – close to the stumps was his plan, risking batsmen at fine leg, square leg, midwicket all being in range; yet somehow it worked perfectly!

At 77/6, PBKS looked in trouble; however, Ashutosh Sharma’s 28-ball 61 saved them. Playing some helicopter pulls and taking Madhwal on hard, Ashutosh helped move closer towards their target; unfortunately his last-ball boundary proved insufficient as their title defense fell short of victory.

Sam Curran addressed the media immediately following their win and spoke highly of Ashutosh Sharma for helping bring back into contention their innings, feeling great having helped to get within striking distance of winning again. Curran credits Ashutosh with giving them incredible confidence as they progressed and praises Arshdeep Singh’s final over performance as well.
