Though not initially included, Sundar was nonetheless selected and put on display his worthiness by bowling seven wickets at an economy rate below eight runs per over on day one, contributing towards New Zealand’s collapsed batting position.
His bowling strategy focused on pitching the ball accurately on middle and off and spinning away from left-handers, using flat deliveries with undercutters against right-handed batsmen that caused them to mistime their shots. In domestic cricket he regularly bowls full-length deliveries as an assessment tool of their ability to score from long off.
After struggling in his initial two IPL matches, his performance against Delhi should give him confidence to carry through with the remaining matches and help Hyderabad reach the top of the table.
He is an all-round talent with the potential to bat up the order and bowl effectively, so it would be fantastic if he made it into India’s national side. Playing against Delhi Capitals should give him an opportunity to demonstrate why he deserves a spot. In any case, hopefully his performance in remaining matches of IPL can see him earn selection for international team duty; his next match against Punjabi Legends should help improve his form further.
