Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Delhi Capitals Match Scorecard
KKR have taken the early lead, with Phil Salt and youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi playing key shots to get the scoreboard moving.
Mitchell Starc bowled an excellent over, taking one wicket and five runs off it – that will seriously hamper DC’s hopes of setting a record run chase.
KKR 153 for 9 in 20 overs
KKR have shown excellent batting form but are in trouble overall. Their top order has been decimated by Delhi bowlers, leading to their run rate decreasing rapidly and an inability to pick up quick wickets to build momentum despite an excellent start.
Eden Gardens offers an excellent playing surface, yet seems more beneficial for spinners than fast bowlers. Arora and Chakravarthy have caused significant problems for Capitals batsmen while leaving hosts vulnerable against rapid bowlers such as Amir.
Chakravarthy has made an incredible comeback following an injury, and his pace has drawn out the best from Kuldeep Yadav. Meanwhile, visitors are struggling to connect their shots properly and have been punished accordingly.
Harshit Rana has also benefitted from the pitch, using its turn to his advantage and deny the DC middle order the space they require to perform well. He has taken two wickets from four overs while using it well for maximum impact.
Players Performance
Abishek Porel attempted to walk across the stumps and scoop Harshit over fine leg but failed to complete his move and was caught by deep midwicket. Harshit then followed up with another short ball that cramped up Porel’s left-handed batsman causing an inside edge which went past third man for a run-out.
Phil Salt smashed Khaleel Ahmed for six and now has reached his fourth fifty in just 26 balls, adding 79 with Sunil Narine in the sixth over for a strong start at 79 for no loss. Axar Patel removed Sunil Narine but left Rinku Singh out as momentum left KKR, but Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer held on in an unbroken stand of 57 runs to keep up their momentum and maintain it until Axar Patel could come in and remove Sunil Narine from play and play-on was played out as Axar Patel removed Sunil Narine but Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer held on with an unbroken stand of their own between Axar Patel’s bowlers, holding onto them until Axar Patel removed them both before Axar Patel ran him off from behind after Axar Patel removed Sunil Narine from play-on; adding 79 between themselves before Axar Patel removed Sunil Narine while playing on Rinku Singh was played-on, but Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer held firm by producing an unbroken 57 run stand between themselves, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer held out until Axar Patel played on Rinku Singh who both contributed as Shreyas Iyer Xar Patel removed Sunil Narine while Axar Patel removed Sunil Narine and Axar Patel removed Sunil Narine while Axar Patel removed Sunil Narine; however Shreyas Iyer and Rinku Singh who held onto him while Vinkatesh Iyer to keep going unbroke 57 run stand between Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer to hold out 57 runs without lossing and Renku Singh left them off while then played him off before Patel took care.
Rishabh Pant, their captain, has fallen short in his bid for an IPL century after Mitchell Starc took his wicket off the first delivery. Varun Chakravarthy and Vaibhav Arora managed to contain DC batsmen during power play to keep DC on the back foot.
KKR 159 for 9 in 20 overs
Virat Kohli displayed incredible elegance when pulling to deep midwicket boundary and reverse hitting Rasikh Salam for six. Additionally, he scored runs off Sumit Kumar twice-ball six to keep Delhi’s innings flowing smoothly.
Sunil Narine and Phil Salt emerged as an effective pair. Starting slowly but quickly becoming aggressive as they played shots with nonchalance similar to Deadpool or Han Solo as they hit sixes and fours like mosquitoes.
Both players struck three sixes and five fours during a 39-ball partnership that produced an unassailable 104-run stand for Kolkata Knight Riders against Delhi bowlers. Teenage batsman Angkrish Raghuvanshi kept up the pressure as she kept matching both batters shot for shot to pile misery on them both.
KKR Strategy
Delhi was put into real difficulty as they attempted to chase down 416 runs in two innings. Varun Chakaravarthy took swift action, striking to remove Prithvi Shaw as he looked set for century but lost his nerve, with Chakaravarthy then taking advantage of this miscue and taking out Shaw off leg stump. Chakaravarthy won both reviews against Shaw as Chakaravarthy had scooped it up before the batsmen even knew it.
Vaibhav Arora delivered another devastating blow for DC in their attempt to achieve record breaking status; Abishek Porel was out for an eye-catching duck, signaling trouble ahead for DC who then conceded 11 runs from their over.
But Delhi rebounded quickly behind Rishabh Pant’s heroic strokes as captain. He showed an aggressive style of play while hitting some beautiful drives and flicks to keep their opponent at bay. Unfortunately, though, Rishabh made some silly errors that ended his innings prematurely; one mistimed swipe off Kuldeep Yadav was his undoing and ended his run of scoring runs.
Sunil Narine bowled an effective but wicketless over that punished Delhi with a big ask in this over. They struggled to stay ahead of their asking rate in this over, so quick action may be required from them in order to keep this game alive.
KKR 158 for 9 in 20 overs
Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine got Kolkata Knight Riders off to an excellent start, amassing 105 runs in the powerplay before eventually being bowled out by Lockie Ferguson and Colin de Grandhomme within short succession. Gautam Gambhir and England’s Eoin Morgan then found newfound form, adding 105 runs in 11.5 overs to take their side’s score past 227/6 at one stage.
Kolkata struggled in the final quarter but their lower middle order held on valiantly for their victory, although not enough for Delhi to come back into the game.
Rishabh Pant hit two sixes and four fours on his way to scoring 55 off 24 balls as Delhi nearly pulled back into their chase; unfortunately however, several wickets fell in the final over leading them just short of reaching their target.
Anrich Nortje was effective with the ball for the visitors but allowed too many runs through his over. He returned figures of one for 29 in four overs. Varun Chakaravarthy made an impactful bowl for his hosts by striking two Delhi batsmen out; Tristan Stubbs and Sumit Kumar both scored sixes from his over, though Chakaravarthy almost managed a third wicket during that spell.
Russell Opening
Russell struck his opening delivery over long on for six but missed on his second delivery, before smashing another six off an off-spinner over square leg for yet another six. On subsequent balls he hit four fours before hitting one last ball for single off it all.
Bumrah starts the over with a leg bye before bowling a short one that initially appears to have caught out Keaton Jennings but which his appeal against as being caught-behind was ultimately turned down as the batsman did not play it with bat in hand.
Leg bye to finish the over, KKR were poised for an unprecedented run chase; unfortunately it wasn’t enough as they were all out for 158 after 20 overs – although their performance here will undoubtedly bring them closer towards playoff contention. On Saturday, they’ll take on Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens after keeping Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav through RTM (Right to Match) cards – also signing Andre Russell and Ryan ten Doeschate as new arrivals. This has strengthened their batting depth, increasing their chances of finishing in the top four of the table. They currently sit fourth with 49 points and have won 13 of 18 matches played so far this season; they hope to keep this momentum going when they play their remaining three home matches and aim to win all of them if they want to qualify for playoffs.
