Mohammed Siraj ignites Royal Challengers Bangalore early, while Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan help save them in the Powerplay.

Toss

Faf du Plessis of Royal Challengers Bangalore won the toss and elected to bat first, making one change with Suyash Prabhudessai replaced by all-rounder Mahipal Lomror – while Glenn Maxwell returned to Bengaluru’s batting lineup.

RCB have struggled to convert toss wins into wins this season, yet have an excellent track record when playing away games: six matches played so far with five victories recorded so far.

Although RCB have one of the strongest spin bowling squads in IPL 2024, their batsmen have struggled to play it to their advantage. That could explain why they called on left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh against SRH last weekend. GT have many options when it comes to their spin bowling with Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmed and Mohit Sharma available – so they may opt to utilize these spinners during powerplay to control Virat Kohli & Co.

First Over

Gujarat had an inauspicious start as they lost three wickets within the Powerplay. However, Sai Sudharsan turned around their fortunes with an impressive unbeaten innings of 86 runs that helped their side achieve an acceptable total score.

Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to bowl first, taking two wickets each with Siraj and Swapnil in their opening spell to put pressure on Gujarat batsmen.

Will Jacks was then dispatched out to bat and promptly hit an incredible century, becoming Player of the Match for it – it was awarded as fifth fastest IPL century ever! Though early on he struggled finding his timing he managed to stay calm and keep firing; crediting Virat Kohli with keeping him composed; believing this learning curve will serve him in future matches.

Second Over

After losing three wickets during powerplay, Royal Challengers Bangalore seemed in trouble, until Will Jacks came on to bat and took full advantage of Mohit Sharma and Khan by amassing 29 runs in that final over to guarantee their win lopsidedly.

Early in the match, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli put on a show for RCB by racing to 92/0 in the powerplay but then GT bowlers changed things around dramatically.

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan attempted to break free, but failed. Glenn Maxwell took advantage of their weakness to have them caught at long-on by Cameron Green – leaving GT on 23/3 at the end of their powerplay; their lowest powerplay score this season. It also dealt a blow to their playoff chances; now needing to win all remaining games before qualifying; rain has stopped but could wreak havoc later in the match.

Third Over

Will Jacks was honored with the Player of the Match honor for his incredible 122-run innings. Initially frustrated at himself for being unable to find his rhythm early on, but Virat Kohli kept him calm and ensured he remained composed throughout his innings. Over-hitting became more frequent but once Will trusted himself it all came easily.

Faf du Plessis was delighted with how his side bowled. He felt their bowlers could easily push Gujarat back into trouble, but Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan did well to salvage them out. Bengaluru are now right back in contention for a top-4 finish while Gujarat remain in the lower half requiring additional wins if they want any chance at reaching the playoffs.

Fourth Over

Gujarat Titans after an initially slow start exploded onto the scene during their middle overs innings with Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan forging an incredible partnership of 86 runs that propelled them past 200/3 – led by Shahrukh Khan who scored an explosive 58 runs himself!

RCB’s batsmen struggled against spinners. Faf du Plessis chipped one, and midwicket ran in from deep to take an excellent catch.

Noor Ahmed seemed uncomfortable on this track and bowled wides and conceded some needles boundaries before Shubman Gill took over from him at one end. RCB collapsed from 92/0 to 134/6 after losing three wickets in the Powerplay, including Noor Ahmed who bowled some wides as well as conceding some needles boundaries before eventually succumbing.

Fifth Over

Home side has a real chance at keeping their playoff hopes alive as they post an impressive total on a pitch that appears favourable to batsmen. Faf du Plessis and Kohli have spearheaded their charge and scored an impressive total in Powerplay (63 runs).

Dayal has come back into their attack, bowling a slow full toss down leg-side which was cut by Kohli to long on for a single. Dayal then bowls another slower full toss which Jacks held his shape against and flicked it over fine leg for six! Gujarat are on the verge of elimination and must win their remaining games to retain playoff hopes; that would require significant improvement against spinners in particular.

Sixth Over

After an impressive opening performance, Gujarat batsmen found it difficult to sustain momentum at M Chinnaswamy Stadium and while Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia contributed, their team score fell short at this high-scoring venue.

Green bowls short and Miller is too early into his pull shot, missing. Instead he taps it to third man for an infield single.

RCB’s openers were determined to make this match exciting, and du Plessis began his innings well by scoring an 18-ball half century in only 18 deliveries before being dismissed for 123 by Will Jacks in the 19th over despite help from Kohli and Jacks against GT bowlers. Unfortunately for them though, their chances of reaching playoffs now appear dim as they trail far behind on points table and must win all remaining games to remain viable contenders.

Seventh Over

The wicket has taken a tumble and batsmen are struggling with spinners – it appears 200 runs could easily fall short on this track.

Mohammed Siraj breaks Shahrukh Khan and Sai Sudharsan’s dangerous partnership with an effective yorker from him, leaving their batsmen facing an uphill climb ahead.

Gill defends the first delivery before pushing it through for a single. With one swift stroke he then hits four more runs to claim victory in an innings of four overs.

Mohit Sharma returned to the attack. Kohli almost ran himself out with a drive through covers; however, he managed to rebound by hitting a six over mid wicket on the next ball. RCB easily reached 200 as Jacks produced an unbeaten century off 41 deliveries, becoming only the fifth fastest to score one in IPL history! They went on to win by nine wickets.

Eighth Over

At this stage, there was nothing stopping RCB as they raced forward with their pursuit. Faf du Plessis hit an amazing half-century while Will Jacks proved too formidable for GT bowlers to contain.

Mohit Sharma opened this over with an over-arm full and straight delivery that Kohli drove towards long on for four.

Shahrukh and Sai Sudharsan have joined GT now, with Mohammed Siraj taking charge with back of length deliveries that find Gill pushing it through midwicket for one, then Will slamming one flat and wide of short third to score four runs off this over. Dot ball ends the over and RCB close in on their target with 27 runs off it – an immense victory.

Nineth Over

After a slow start, Gujarat Titans unleashed an aggressive middle overs attack to post a challenging 200/3 score. Sai Sudharsan and M Shahrukh Khan scored half-centuries to propel them towards this position.

Rajat Patidar and Cameron Green of RCB have introduced new life into their side’s batting line-up, relieving top order batsmen of some of their workload and helping the club rise from seventh place on the points table to sixth.

Maxwell makes an attempt at pulling but finds himself tight for space and hits it over third man for a one-bounce four. RCB take control with this momentum. To qualify for playoffs they’ll need to continue this good form in remaining matches; next up could be an important test against struggling Mumbai Indians team; stay tuned!
