England vs Bangladesh
Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first in a match that was expected to be reduced due to rainy conditions. England captain Jos Buttler would have preferred bowling first; however, this decision will not alter the result of the match.
Bangladesh started well, with Liton Das striking three fours off Chris Woakes in the first over. However, their innings quickly fizzled out when Woakes struck again with another excellent catch by Jos Buttler at short third man from Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s edge – this time for short third man!
Bangladesh recovered from their early collapse to score 75 runs in their final two overs before being dismissed for 364 in 50-over innings. England’s finishers failed to make big scores but overall the innings wasn’t as disappointing as at first appeared.
After the drinks break, England openers Dilara Akter and Shathi Rani both remained unbeaten but weren’t making many runs. Linsey Smith bowled an over in which both batsmen were hit hard by her leg spinner delivery and fell lbw to it simultaneously.
Topley was back on attack in the ninth over, taking two wickets of Nat Sciver-Brunt (2) and Heather Knight (6) in rapid succession, supported by Fahima Khatun’s superb 2/18 figures. Maia Bouchier came just short of scoring her half century when caught behind by Nahida Akter for 48. Alice Capsey left England struggling for late runs – yet had enough runs left in their innings to seal victory!
England batting first
England’s strategy to bat first paid dividends against Bangladesh in their inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup match, as Nat Sciver-Brunt, Sarah Glenn, Charlie Dean and Linsey Smith each picked up two wickets as they eased to an easy victory. Bangladesh never looked in danger of reaching a target that always seemed out of their reach while openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett combined for an opening partnership of 118 runs between them on first wicket.
England should not simply settle for being an opening batting side under Joe Root, and their results show this lack of effectiveness in this area.
After losing their last five internationals and tossing away every toss, England must improve in both fielding and behind the stumps – starting by understanding better how to play on slow tracks.
On a slow surface, they started slowly with just one run scored off the first over. But then Salt struck a back of a length delivery to square leg and hit it through the covers for four runs off it – taking control of proceedings with his openers.
And then the pair continue to alternate the strike as they accumulate runs quickly, adding another single in Kuldeep’s first over.
But then he made his breakthrough, as Samita Shetty executed an exceptional run-out to deny England their double in quick time. Carse then jabbed a ball to leg before hooking it through midwicket for six. Gill lobbed one over to cover sweeper to add two further sixes for England. England amassed a respectable total, but when it comes time to chase they must use more strategic approaches when chasing.
Bangladesh batting second
England managed a tight chase well despite suffering three early wickets. Maia Bouchier miscued a flighted Rabeya Khan delivery into mid on in the seventh over, while Nat Sciver-Brunt was caught at backward point off Fahima Khatun in the ninth, slowing their run rate significantly and making Bangladesh less inclined to take risks.
Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar came up to bat, leading Bangladesh closer than ever before to a win. Unfortunately, however, despite their best efforts they couldn’t capitalize on their momentum and fell short of reaching their target of 119 runs.
Sam Curran set off the England attack early, dismissing Litton, Shanto and Rahim to limit Bangladeshi innings. Keacy Carty then fell victim to Taskin Ahmed’s slow delivery for an lbw call; following this wicketfall Kraigg Brathwaite was caught off him at gully and it seemed that all was lost in terms of victory for England.
Bangladesh had trouble adapting to their new squad quickly. Their openers managed to score well while the middle order struggled and were unable to take their side to victory in the last over.
England captain Heather Knight decided that after losing the toss, Bangladesh were to field first and set Maia Bouchier and Nat Sciver-Brunt up as their opening pair; followed by more contributions from further down their batting order.
England bowling first
England are in trouble with their bat here, looking set for a big total on this tricky wicket. Down to only two frontline quicks and three part-time spinners as part of their attack, this could prove challenging to chase down.
England’s powerplay had been going well before being derailed by Harshit Rana’s debutant performance with two wickets from his fourth over. This came at great cost as they relied heavily on Joe Root and Jos Buttler at the top of their order for runs and wickets.
England started off well, with Phil Salt and Ben Duckett providing solid opening partnership. However, their top order soon disintegrated as four wickets fell within nine balls to leave England in serious difficulty at 144/6.
Kuldeep Yadav follows through on his plan of tightening things down and smothering England batsmen, taking full advantage of Buttler’s improbability by bowling with length in and movement off it on the leg side for four behind square. Later in the over, Buttler then plays back an additional four down the ground off this same bowler.
The wicket has begun to turn slightly, making England’s task easier in scoring runs. They still struggle with getting the ball into gaps and hitting anything authoritatively; perhaps a sign they need a rest before trying again? Meanwhile, spinners could do some damage; though they haven’t had as much luck thus far, they remain dangerous threat in this matchup.
Bangladesh bowling second
A slow pitch is making life tough for England’s batters as their asking rate has increased to over 10 runs per over. Spinners are taking full advantage, with wicketkeeper Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Alice Capsey both falling victim to Ritu Moni and Fahima Khatun respectively.
Bangladesh’s bowlers have successfully managed the run-rate throughout, which will be crucial in saving this match. But Bangladesh must also take some risks with their bat to do this successfully.
Enamul Haque Jnr has won two five-wicket hauls in one Test match against Zimbabwe at Mirpur this year; his display against their top order bowlers was one of the finest examples of how home conditions can help an opponent to flourish.
Bangladesh are well equipped to disrupt England with four spinners in their team and slow bowling tactics, which is proving effective as the visitors struggle to score runs with only a few overs remaining in this match.
Bangladesh bowlers have shown great patience with the ball and batsmen have not been able to exploit this slow surface fully. But despite these difficulties, Bangladesh players have shown great maturity by persevering through this testing period.
Shakib Al Hasan excels at bowling slow deliveries in the nets, striking strikes on middle and leg where batsmen attempt to flick towards leg side but get hit in thigh pad instead and is caught by Steven Finn in leg gully area. Bangladesh players rejoice as one of their greatest wins to date is about to become history!
